Almaty, April 29, 2025, at 10:00 AM, a roundtable discussion will take place in the conference hall of the “Kazzhol Almaty” Hotel as part of the project “Breaking the Vicious Circle – A Multifaceted Approach to Combating Torture in Kazakhstan.” The project is implemented with the support of the European Union and aims to promote human rights and eradicate the practice of torture in Kazakhstan.
The event will bring together representatives of government bodies, law enforcement agencies, the legal community, human rights organizations, and experts whose work is related to conducting and using forensic medical examinations within criminal proceedings, including in the investigation of cases of torture and ill-treatment.
Participants of the roundtable will discuss key aspects of the use of forensic medical examinations in criminal proceedings, including in the context of investigating cases of torture and ill-treatment. The focus will include:
– human rights and legal analysis of forensic examinations;
– institutional and procedural mechanisms for improvement;
– development of alternative (non-state) forensic expertise;
– independence and admissibility of forensic expertise as evidence, especially in cases related to human rights violations.
The event will serve as a platform for professional dialogue on combating torture and protecting human rights with the participation of experts, representatives of state institutions, human rights defenders, and legal professionals.
